As I mentioned yesterday, I’m in the midst of helping my mom freshen up the accessories for the built-in unit in my parents’ family room. And, as I predicted, she really liked the image with white shelves and a lot of bright books and accessories. With that in mind, I decided to round up some of my favorite (bright) design books and some accessories that would coordinate well with the coral West Elm pillows we bought last summer.
Well Mom, what do you think?
1. Urchin // 2. Elephant // 3. Sculptural Sphere (or this) // 4. Love Print // 5. Art (sold out, but according to Insta, more are coming soon!) // 6. Domino // 7. Big Book of Small Cool Places // 8. Design*Sponge At Home // 9. Remodelista // 10. Decorate // 11. Bud Vase // 12. Face Planter // 13. Tall Vase // 14. Absolutely Beautiful Things // 15. Elements of Style // 16. Bookends // 17. Coasters // 18. Well-Read Women // 19. Creativity at Work
If you’re trying to find some new elements for your shelves or end tables, here are a few questions you should consider before you begin:
1. What do you already have that can be used? The best accessories (and books) are those collected over time. So whenever I’m styling end tables, nightstands or shelves, I start by shopping my own apartment because sometimes just rotating what I already own will gives me the fresh look I’m craving. (And other times I realize I really need more decorative objects!)
2. What colors do you want to emphasize? It’s much easier to pick out accessories when you have a color scheme in mind. If there are pillows that are a bright color, just a few small (and inexpensive objects) in another part of the room will help create a cohesive and well thought out look.
3. What elements do you want to incorporate? One thing I noted in the inspiration images is that most had four main elements: books, vases, objects and prints. If you don’t have a lot of books, incorporating the other items will help the shelves look balanced.
