It never fails: every year around this time I get the urge to get out of the frozen tundra otherwise known as Chicago, but have nothing booked. This year is no different and, although that’s not likely to change, it didn’t stop me from dreamily browsing Airbnb beach houses. Which lead to a new life goal: to stay in a villa with an open-air kitchen. (And I don’t even like cooking!)
Here are a few beach houses around the world that will have you ready to hop on a plane bound for sun:
This “Rockstar Villa” (also pictured above) sleeps up to 16 people and comes equipped with surf boards and bikes. It’s not actually on the beach, but close enough that you can “smell the salt water from the house.” With the entire back wall of the house opening up to this backyard, that’s close enough for me!
At only $90 (per person – odd) per night, this airy house on a private beach sleeps up to eight, but would be a great bargain for a couple! (And I wouldn’t mind meeting the host, who apparently splits his time between Paris and Brazil . . . .)
I have been wanting to go to Costa Rica and learn to surf for years. Since the owners of this solar-powered “Adorable Surfer’s Beach House” also run a nearby surf school, it looks like this would be the perfect place.
If I decide to do my own Eat, Pray, Love adventure, I will be spending the Bali portion here, with a glass of vino in hand. At $146 per night, mosquito nets are included, but you need to carry your own suitcase down what sounds like MANY stairs. Does this count as camping?
I never really envisioned my dream Mexican villa, but this is definitely it. I also never thought about putting a hot tub in a living room, but it definitely works. And again, I need to stay somewhere with an open-air kitchen.
