I have to say that I was excited when I came across the listing for Vince Vaughn’s Chicago penthouse in the top three floors of the Palmolive Building at 159 E. Walton. I mean, isn’t celebrity real estate even more interesting in your own city?
Like every home, this one has a compelling history. According to Curbed, Crain’s and DNAInfo, Vaughn paid $12m for a 7,880 square-foot duplex (comprising the 36th and 37th floors) in 2006 and at some point purchased the 35th floor — which reportedly housed Hugh Hefner’s office when Playboy Enterprises occupied the space — to bring the unit to 12,000 square feet. Currently listed on the MLS for $13.9m, Vaughn’s original (off-market) asking price was $24.7m in 2011 before he listed it in 2012 for $18.4m — and then $16.8m. In 2013, he dropped the price again to $14.9m (again, off market), where it has stayed until this week. The unit features five bedrooms, six bathrooms and what appears to be an entire floor of entertaining space — including a screening room, billiards room, card room and second kitchen.
I would LOVE to see inside the unit because I’m a bit confused by the photos in the listing — most appear to be of the entertaining space (which I assume previously housed Hefner’s office) — but I don’t have a great sense of the layout and current condition of the other two floors. The picture above has to be the second kitchen, right? And are the locker room and hot tub (shown in the listing) part of the unit or in the building? (I didn’t include those pictures in the post because I assume they are building amenities . . . but I find it hard to tell from the listing alone.)
Check out the pictures below and then take a look at this listing on Lakeshore Drive — also for $13.9m. Which would you choose?
